what's the deal with the japanese art stuff
I love that we are getting all this japanese art versions of the mechs, but where are you getting them from?

I had a friend with the japanese BT manual way back when and I know they changed some names and alpha codes, but damn are there more than I remember. I though BT's tabletop died rather quickly in japan. Are these custom designs by fans perhaps?

From pixiv...
This was from Moonrune-bro: -

"メックウォリアー" (mekkuuoriaa)
"バトルテック" (batorutekku)
(Unseen)
ダグラム (Dougram, for the quads and Shad/Griff/Wolvie),
マクロス (Macross, good for the heavies and Bugs),
デストロイド (Destroid, specific to the Unseen heavies

JP BT resources
On pixiv/websearches, look for "メックウォリアー" (mekkuuoriaa) and "バトルテック"
(batorutekku). This will pull up different results.
Also useful (Unseen):
ダグラム (Dougram, for the quads and Shad/Griff/Wolvie)
マクロス (Macross, good for the heavies and Bugs)
デストロイド (Destroid, specific to the Unseen heavies, less the Marauder.).
Note that searching “Valkyrie” is a good way to get watchlisted by the FBI.

Published Books
Note that the Japanese version was published with only moderate input from FASA, roughly at the same time as their outreach to VMI for TRO: 3055. There has been essentially no official support since.

Boxed set with:
• Master Rules equivalent, (BT 3e-era, BUT appear to be closer to 2e)
• Tech Manual (parts of TRO 3025 and 3026, includes limited 'Mechs from 3050 and 3055)
• Both standard “battletech” maps (Some players appear to have imported English map packs)
• A counter sheet of the base Unseen. Counters exist for the Chameleon and Stalker elsewhere
RPG (Verified through JP Amazon, no content information)
1+ scenario book, looks like there may be three but the cover images are very degraded. One appears to
be a translation of “Royalty and Rogues”
RPG main book (MechWarrior 2e)
Mechwarrior Adventure Replays:
Shooter of the Magic Bullet
Storm on Anywhere
Light Novels:
??? at least 2, can't find many details
“Rebecca H. Bayonetta” - main character

A rules rip with some information to help update them to the Jihad era.

Bunch of information about the canon 'Mechs, some fan-designs.
Fanartists I follow:
T-Ta. Does humorous redesigns of the JP-tech 'Mechs.
S. Shimizu. Mostly Gundam and older Mecha shows; has a good chunk of BT related stuff.
Captain 06; very active player, has redesigned most Western units until the Civil War as JP-tech versions, makes counters and play aids.

As of 2017-06-13, he said he was going to get more info.

Update 2017-06-20
JP BT resources
2017 Revision 2, with much help from the Japanese poster. His comments are in GREEN here. I use
italics for commentary. The original document was made in ~2011, so there have been some changes.
On pixiv/websearches, look for "メックウォリアー" (mekkuuoriaa) and "バトルテック"
(batorutekku). This will pull up different results. Generally, as in the States, "Mechwarrior" is used by
people familiar with the video games and not the tabletop.
To find Unseen designs, search for the original series.
太陽の牙 ダグラム [Fang of the Sun] Dougram.
Unit names:
• Scorpion = Blizzard Gunner = ブリザード ガンナー
• Goliath = Crab Gunner = クラブガンナー
• Griffin = Roundfacer = ラウンドフェイサー (often mislabelled as a "Soltic" = ソルティック ,
which is actually the manufacturer.)
• Thunderbolt = Ironfoot = アイアンフット (sometimes mistagged as "Hasty" = ヘイスティ ;
again, this is the manufacturer)
• Shadow Hawk = Dougram = ダグラム
• Wolverine = Blockhead = ブロックヘッド
• BattleMaster = Bigfoot =ビッグフット
Note that the Blockhead is the same size/weight category as the Bigfoot, so Japanese models tend to be
slightly too big for Battletech purposes. There is also a six-legged variant on the Scorpion/Blizzard
Gunner called the "Desert Gunner" and a heavily-modified/upgunned IFV based on the Goliath/Crab
Gunner called the "Tequila Gunner". Some people will also tag with the manufacturers, but this is less
important with the Dougram units. The Dougram is the main mecha for the series, and has several
variants with different weaponry.
In addition, the Striker light tank bears a close resemblance to the "Instead" armored car from
Dougram, and the Savannah Master is loosely based on a light hover jeep from the series - although
neither get much fanart.
There have been at least two published Dougram wargames (Battle of Stanley and Battle of Kalnock,
both of which got extremely limited US releases from Tomy) and several scenarios for the
DualMagazine Universal Wargame System. Rules for the Tomy games are up on the web, and can be
played with Battletech Miniatures; the maps for them are an easter egg in the current releases of
MegaMek's mapping software, and can be printed from there.
クラッシャージョウ - Crusher Joe
Primarily gave Battletech the Corsair and Samurai fighters and the Galleon Light Tank. The Locust is
based (VERY loosely) on the Ostall = オストール hunter-killer drone from this series, and the
Leopard on the Minerva-class carrier. There is very little fanart of anything BUT the Minerva, which
isn't really close enough to the BT model to be of much use.
Super Dimension Fortress Macross マクロス
Unit Names:
Unlike Dougram, Macross used very generic names for its units, so it's very hard to search for
individual models. Note also that searching “Valkyrie” on Pixiv is a good way to get watchlisted by the
FBI, so I'm not linking it. The model numbers are almost always tagged in English, however. You can
also search "Mecha" = メカ and マクロス together, though some artists will neglect one tag or the
other.
• Marauder = Glaug =
• Archer = Spartan
• Warhammer = Tomahawk
• Longbow = Phalanx
• Stinger/ STG LAM = VF-1A Valkyrie
• Wasp / WSP LAM = VF-1S Valkyrie Custom
• Crusader = VF-1A or custom head (loosely based on something from another show, Orguss) in the
Armored Valkyrie configuration.
• Valkyrie: modified VF-1J Valkyrie. No JP equivalent.
• Chameleon = VF/VT-1D Training Valkyrie
• Phoenix Hawk: VF-1S or the Orguss head on a Valkyrie equipping a FAST Pack (Super Valkyrie)
• Royal Phoenix Hawk = Strike Valkyrie
Other useful searches:
• デストロイド (Destroid, specific to the Unseen heavies, not counting the Marauder.)
Published Books
The Japanese version was published with only moderate input from FASA, roughly at the same time as
their outreach to VMI for TRO: 3055. There has been essentially no official support since. There is a
known translation error that causes SRMs to all hit the same location, making the SRM-6 a legal
headcapper in the Japanese game.
VMI ported Mechwarrior 1 to the PC and possibly the Famicom DISK (trying to verify). Certain
designs from that became the Clanner IICs from 3055; in addition, several of the Japanese redesigns
for the Unseen were added to the Solaris VII Boxed set in the US.
All mecha were extensively redesigned by Studio Nue - who had previously done the Valkyrie and
Glaug designs for Macross, They were working on Armored Core at the time, and it shows.
Kenichi Sonoda (yes, that one) did book covers for some of the Japanese edition's supporting books
and some character portraits in the main books.
From the perspective of the Japanese, its description is listed since it has some corrections.
The English version translated into Japanese is as follows.
· BattleTech, 2nd Edition BOX (FASA-1604)
• Master Rules equivalent, (BT 3e-era, BUT appear to be closer to 2e)
• Tech Manual (parts of TRO 3025 and 3026, includes limited 'Mechs from 3050 and 3055)
• Both standard “battletech” maps (Some players appear to have imported English map packs)
• A counter sheet of the base Unseen. Counters exist for the Chameleon and Stalker elsewhere
· CityTech, 1st Edition BOX (FASA-1608)
"By the way, there are only vehicles included in CityTech 1e. VTOL does not introduce the rules
themselves. "
· MechWarrior: The BattleTech Role Playing Game 1st Edition BOOK (FASA-1607)
· Tales of the Black Widow Company BOOK (FASA-1605)
· Gray Death Legion Scenario pack BOOK (FASA-1617)
And
· Gray Death trilogy (Decision at Thunder Rift, Mercenary's Star, The Price of Glory)
This version has revised art.
Other source books are not translated.
The Japanese gameplay environment has stopped in front of The Fourth Succession War in 3028, and
board game players do not know War of 3039 or Clans.

[Editor's note:]
"Shooter of the Magic Bullet" and "Storm on Anywhere" contain a bonus record sheet in the back for
the Cyclops "Hecatonichres" and the Grand Dragon "Yamato no Orochi", piloted by the story's
villains. “Rebecca H. Bayonetta” is the main character. She drives an Enforcer and wears its

Are all Japanese translated PC games. I hope it will be helpful.

Great stuff. Gonna use and abuse this.

Gotta ask though; what's with the Valkyrie getting you on a watch list about.
Doc_S

>valkyrie watchlisting

There is a LOT of extremely explicit loli art tagged "valkyrie" and there's no distinction between the 'Mechs and the Norse shieldmaidens in the tagging. When you search using a tag Pixiv doesn't always filter explicit results even when you have the option turned on.
I figured it was fair warning for our Canadian comrades.
